Building the capacity of communities to respond to and recover from disasters is central to what we do at ResilientCo.
We’ve recently completed training 65 community members across six communities in East Gippsland Shire to activate and manage Emergency Relief Centres.
The project included an introduction to emergency relief and a practical set up of an Emergency Relief Centre at the following six locations:
Omeo
Buchan
Lakes Entrance
Orbost
Cann River
Mallacoota
These communities are often isolated due to their challenging geographical locations and unable to access services.
For example, after delivering the training to Mallacoota, the following day the township was isolated by rising floodwaters.
It has been an absolute privilege for the team to work alongside East Gippsland Shire Council to deliver this project and witness the commitment and passion these communities have for supporting each other.
The project is jointly funded by the Victorian Government and Commonwealth Government under the Commonwealth-State Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements.
