In the past two years, ResilientCo has worked with over 25 local government authorities and organisations to build their approaches to community resilience and crisis management.
A number of these engagements have involved training of both executive teams and council staff to help them understand concepts of consequence, the opportunities of community resilience, and their respective roles within a disaster.
This training has included tailored and pragmatic approaches.
It has guided staff, elected officials and their executive leadership in the midst of crisis, including storms, bushfires and floods.
What we’ve learned:
As a leader, understanding your communities is vital
Don’t underestimate the resilience and deep knowledge of your communities
Use existing networks to support communication and engagement efforts
Having a well-practiced and understood crisis management structure in place reduces confusion internally and provides a cohesive approach externally
Understand your role
Take staff wellbeing seriously and have support mechanisms in place
Understand the needs of your external stakeholders and have strong external relationships in place before you need them
